What is open rhinoplasty?
In the open technique used in rhinoplasty, the skin of the nose is lifted towards the forehead (the forehead flap) by making an incision in the part between the nostrils, called the columella. The bone and cartilage structures that the surgeon will work on become fully visible and more easily accessible.
The advantages of open nose surgery
Small asymmetries or deformities that are more difficult to see in closed rhinoplasty can be more easily recognized in open rhinoplasty. The open technique also makes it easier to shape the dorsum and place cartilage grafts.
The Piezo method, in which the bones are shaped with ultrasonic sound waves instead of tools that crush or cut them, is used in open rhinoplasty.
Although the closed technique has its own advantages, surgeons may prefer to use the open technique in complex cases with severe deformities and revision rhinoplasty operations.
Naturally, the technique to be used unequivocally depends on the surgeon's assessment and not the patient's preference. Both open rhinoplasty and closed rhinoplasty are techniques that should be performed meticulously by an experienced surgeon.
